Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi Parliament announced on Saturday its intention to create a national authority to combat drugs, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

The new national authority will coordinate with the executive bodies and will be linked to the Prime Minister’s office, according to INA.

Member in the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, Hussein Al-Amiri, indicated that the committee continues to hold meetings regarding the amendment of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017, INA mentioned.

Al-Amiri stressed that the committee will continue to hold meetings with the executive side to create an anti-drug body that includes the best officers and employees specialized in this field.

The committee also follows up with border guards in areas close to neighboring countries where drugs and weapons are smuggled into Iraq, Al-Amiri added.

Earlier, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, directed the Ministry of the Interior to take the necessary measures to reduce organized crime in the country.

Al-Sudani visited the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior on December 5 and held a meeting with senior security officials where he listened to details of the security situation throughout the country, as well as the progress of security plans and services provided to citizens, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Press office.
