Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, announced on Sunday that poverty levels in Iraq have declined.

During his visit to the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Al-Sudani noted that surveys will indicate a decline in poverty levels due to the measures taken by the government, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The Iraqi Prime Minister also confirmed that the government provided the required funds to include the largest number of the poor.

Al-Sudani elaborated that the step resulted in the inclusion of more than 2.15 million families, making it the largest number of poor citizens to be supported by the government.

“The government succeeded in supporting 900,000 families in one year,” Al-Sudani said.

The Iraqi Prime Minister also noted that the government is tackling the causes of poverty in addition to providing health and educational services.

The Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced last January that the poverty rate in Iraq had reached 25 percent, INA reported.

The spokesperson of the Iraqi Planning Ministry, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said that the poverty rate in Iraq reached 25 percent in 2022, indicating that the percentage rose compared to 2019 and 2020, when it did not exceed 20 percent.
