Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, chaired on Thursday a meeting to discuss the construction of the ring road in the capital, Baghdad, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The statement illustrated that the construction of a ring road in Baghdad is one of the important projects that aim to ease traffic congestion in the capital. It also falls within the framework of the government’s vision towards improving services, developing the transport sector and upgrading the infrastructure supporting the economy.

Al-Sudani directed that the construction of the ring road in Baghdad must comply with international standards with a modern engineering design that includes multi-use lanes for transportation.

The Iraqi Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of committing to the completion timelines, adding that the government will overcome obstacles that may hinder the completion of the project.

With a population of more than seven million, Baghdad is suffering from major traffic issues.

Baghdad taxi drivers are getting less cross-town fares per day due to the worsening traffic situation, the AFP reported earlier.

The 90-kilometer motorway project was announced by the previous government of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi.
