Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, welcomed the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones, on Tuesday, where they reviewed the bilateral relations between Iraq and the United Kingdom, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s press office.

Al-Sudani congratulated the Duchess of Edinburgh on the coronation of King Charles III, and expressed appreciation for the British role in supporting Iraq in its war against terrorism, the statement elaborated.

Al-Sudani indicated that Iraq took steps forward to face the effects of terrorism, and made efforts to support Yazidi women, who have been subjected to injustice and assault, the statement illustrated.

The Iraqi Prime Minister indicated that the government launched programs to protect Yazidi women and provide them with all forms of support, the statement explained.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the government supports civil society organizations and the programs of international humanitarian organizations operating in Iraq, and is keen to implement human rights principles, support freedoms, and compensate victims, the statement clarified.

The Duchess of Edinburgh expressed her gratitude and appreciation towards Iraq; praising the efforts of the Iraqi government in the humanitarian field and the adoption of a national strategy supporting women, as well as openness to cooperation with international organizations and learning about the experiences of countries dealing with victims of war crimes, the statement added.

The Duchess of Edinburgh is a member of the British royal family. She is married to Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, who is the youngest sibling of King Charles III.

Sophie is the patron of over 70 charities and organizations. Her charity work primarily revolves around people with disabilities, women’s rights, avoidable blindness and agriculture.
