Iraqi PM stresses battle on drugs as deadly as war on terrorism

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – At the Baghdad Conference on Drug Control in Baghdad, Iraq, Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani addressed the issues related drug trafficking and negative impacts it can have in Iraq and the Middle East.

Al-Sudani emphasized that drug problems pose a significant risk to society and state institutions and that the battle on drugs is just as deadly as the war on terrorism.

The Iraqi Prime Minister further emphasized that his country would not accept drug use or distribution on a social or legal level. Instead, security forces will combat drug trafficking and transportation as a security and terrorism danger.

The Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017 was passed in Iraq and establishes the objectives, procedures, and punishments for drug-related offenses. Furthermore, Iraq has committed resources under a national drug policy for the years 2023–2025 as part of a larger goal to achieve a drug-free Iraq.

Iraq seeks to coordinate efforts with other Arab nations to combat the drug epidemic and gather data and statistics on it.
