Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi security announced on Tuesday that a human trafficking network led by a woman was arrested in southern Iraq, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Police.

The statement elaborated that the network brings girls who ran away from their families, and minors from outside the governorate, for immoral purposes and other socially unacceptable practices that are punishable by law.

The Iraqi Police indicated that legal measures were taken against members of the network and were arrested in accordance with Article 234 of the Iraqi law, the statement explained.

The Iraqi Federal Intelligence and Investigations Agency (FIIA) arrested on Monday members of the network that consists of seven suspects, including three women, in the governorates of Karbala and Dhi Qar.

For years, Iraq recorded an increase in human trafficking crimes, where the victims are often children and teenagers from poor areas. Experts attribute these crimes to the high unemployment rates and the declining living conditions.

Articles 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the Human Trafficking Law No. 28 of 2012 stipulate penalties starting from fines, imprisonment and up to the death penalty.
