Iraq’s Qasim wins the International Weightlifting Federation’s gold medal in Riyadh

Qasim Hasan won Iraq’s first World Championships gold medal in any sport.

Riyadh (IraqiNews.com) – Qasim Hasan Al-Lami earned Iraq’s first gold medal in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the men’s 96 kilos, Al-Lami performed his third consecutive successful lift, winning gold on 175kg and beating off Egyptian Karim Abokahla for second place.

Iraq had its first appearance on top of the podium in any Olympic event at a World Championship in just Al-Lami’s second participation.

Furthermore, it was Iraq’s greatest weightlifting performance since Abdul-Wahid Aziz earned a lightweight bronze medal at the 1960 Olympic Games to go along with his bronze from the World Championships.
