 New refinery project, petrochemical plant unveiled in Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Oil announced new details regarding the Nibras Petrochemicals project, noting that technical and economic studies for the project had been prepared, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

“One of the projects that depend on gas utilization in southern Iraq is the Nibras project, which the Ministry of Oil is working on in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Shell,” the spokesperson of the Oil Ministry, Asem Jihad, told INA.

Jihad elaborated that technical and economic studies for the Nibras Petrochemicals project have been prepared, and several sessions have been held to discuss these studies.

The Iraqi official explained that the government and the ministries concerned with this project hope that it will be one of the pioneering projects in Iraq and the region.

“We are waiting for all technical and contractual aspects and studies to be completed to announce the start of the project,” Jihad clarified.

The Iraqi official added that one of the ministry’s plans is the Al-Faw refinery project with a production capacity of 300,000 barrels.

The spokesperson of the Oil Ministry clarified that once an agreement is reached with a company or a consortium of companies, the project will be announced.

Jihad confirmed that Iraqi efforts are ongoing to have the country one of the main sources of petrochemicals in the region.
