Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, revealed on Thursday during his official visit to Baghdad that Qatar will invest $5 billion in different sectors in Iraq over the coming years, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

In a joint press conference with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Qatar’s Emir asserted his country’s continued support for Iraq and its people, stressing that his visit to Baghdad reflects the depth of the close relations between the two countries and the desire to strengthen these relations in various fields.

Al-Thani called on the Iraqi people to attend the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup, which will be held in Qatar between January 12 and February 10, 2024.

On the other hand, the Iraqi Prime Minister indicated that Qatar will remain one of Iraq’s strongest allies in the region and a leading example of how a sustainable energy industry can be maintained.

Al-Sudani indicated that his meeting with the Emir of Qatar addressed security and information cooperation to maintain the security and stability of the region.

Both leaders attended a ceremony to sign two agreements between the governments of both countries related to air transport services and maritime transport, in addition to a joint declaration of intent between the two countries and a memorandum of understanding allowing holders of diplomatic passports to travel between Qatar and Iraq with no entry visa required.

Representatives of the private sector from the two countries signed several agreements in areas of infrastructure, tourism and health.

Sheikh Tamim is the first Arab leader to visit Iraq since the current Iraqi Prime Minister took office last October.

The spokesperson of the Iraqi government, Basim Al-Awadi, announced earlier on Wednesday that the Emir of Qatar will visit the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Thursday and pointed out that the visit has important political and economic dimensions, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
