Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Samarra Terminal in Baghdad International Airport received on Friday its first flight in 32 years, according to a statement cited by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Head of the Civil Aviation Authority, Imad Al-Asadi, explained that Samarra Terminal received its first flight, coming from Damascus airport, with 150 passengers on board, and there will be many other flights in the future, INA mentioned.

“It is the first flight Samarra Terminal receives since 1990. The reopening of Samarra Terminal is a result of the efforts exerted by officials to improve the aviation in Iraq and to serve travelers,” Al-Asadi said.

Baghdad governor, Muhammad Jaber Al-Atta, announced last Tuesday that the next few days will witness the completion of the maintenance work in Samarra Terminal in Baghdad International Airport to be brought into service.

Al-Atta elaborated that engineers are working on rehabilitating Samarra Terminal, with the contribution of operating companies that have previous contracts with the Baghdad governorate to rehabilitate airport terminals.

Baghdad governor added that the engineers are completing the work related to electrical connections, conveyor belts and the baggage sorting system, to reduce the pressure on Babylon Terminal.

On November 16, a fire broke out in Nineveh Terminal in Baghdad International Airport, prompting the airport authorities to transfer travel procedures to Babylon Terminal.

Baghdad Airport has a single passenger terminal divided into three concourses: A, B and C that are known as Nineveh Terminal, Babylon Terminal and Samara Terminal.

All three concourses are interlinked. Concourse Nineveh connects with Concourse Babylon and this one is linked to Concourse Samara, which makes it easy to move around.
