Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The United Nations in Iraq condemned the abhorrent killing of Tiba al-Ali, a 22-year-old woman who was a blogger, according to a statement issued by the UN in Iraq.

The avoidable death of Tiba is a regretful reminder of the violence and injustice that still exists against women and girls in Iraq today, the statement mentioned.

The so-called honor killing and other forms of gender-based violence violate human rights and cannot be tolerated, the statement explained.

While some efforts have been taken by state institutions to combat these acts of violence against women, more needs to be done towards prevention, protection and accountability, the statement elaborated.

The UN statement also called for the enactment of a law that explicitly criminalizes gender-based violence, in accordance with international human rights standards, together with improved services for survivors and those at risk.

The young woman was strangled to death by her father, after returning to the country, coming from Turkey to attend the 25th Gulf football championship, where the father strangled his daughter to death.

The victim fled to Turkey some time ago due to problems with her family and settled in Istanbul, but she returned to Iraq at the request of her mother.

Since her arrival, she received many death threats, and appealed to the security authorities through her Instagram account to protect her.
