 UN looks forward to Iraq’s participation in 2023 Water Conference

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, confirmed on Wednesday that he looks forward to Iraq’s participation in the UN 2023 Water Conference that will be held this month, during a joint press conference with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.

Guterres called on the international community to support Iraq by addressing environmental challenges and diversifying the economy.

“My visit to Baghdad is to confirm solidarity, and the United Nations support for Iraq,” Guterres said during the joint press conference.

Guterres explained that the challenges facing Iraq are a result of decades of wars and interventions, stressing that there is hope for progress.

The UN Secretary-General valued the Prime Minister’s commitment to addressing the challenges facing the country, including fighting corruption, improving services and diversifying the economy.

Guterres emphasized that the United Nations is ready to support the efforts of the Iraqi government in fighting corruption, diversifying the economy and creating job opportunities.

Guterres expressed his aspiration for Iraq’s participation in the UN 2023 Water Conference, noting that Iraq is one of the countries most affected by climate change.

The UN 2023 Water Conference entitled ‘Water for Sustainable Development’ will take place from March 22 to March 24, 2023, in New York, to coincide with World Water Day.
