ISIL behind bombing in Kurdish capital

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) At least four people were killed and 10 injured when a suicide attacker detonated a car bomb in front of a government building in Erbil, according to medical officials in the city.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Levant has claimed responsibility for a suicide bomber attack in the northern Iraqi Kurdish city of Erbil on Wednesday that killed five people, including two police officers and wounded 29 others. The suicide bomber, driving a Hyundai Elantra loaded with explosives, attempted to force his way into the building of Erbil governorate. The bomber detonated before getting to entrance, after security guards blocked him and fired shots at the vehicle, witnesses and officials said.

The city of Erbil is heavily protected by Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga forces and considered the most secure place in Iraqi Kurdistan, compared to Baghdad — where bombings are a daily occurrence U.S. officials are not confirming reports that ISIS may have been targeting American citizens in the attack in Erbil and in other recent attacks. However, the United States Consulate in Jerusalem issued a security message to Americans in Israel after the deadly attack on a Jerusalem synagogue on Tuesday, warning American citizens to remain vigilant, especially around soft targets – places where people live, congregate, shop or visit.
