Ottawa (IraqiNews.com) On Wednesday 26 soldiers from the elite Canadian Special Forces arrived in Iraq to support Iraqi and Kurdish forces as military advisers.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird confirmed that only 26 of the highly trained Canadian troops were deployed in and around Erbil base, in northern Iraq.

The number of the special forces’ soldiers sent is much smaller than originally thought, but Canada’ officials said that only a smaller contingent was required by the allies in the anti-ISIS coalition.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper stated, that if the government decides to deploy ground forces in a combat mission against ISIS, including an aerial cover mission, it will be subject to a debate and a vote in Parliament.
