Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The legal expert, Tariq Harb stated that “The request of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) to cancel the death penalty is “Illegal and unrealistic.”

In a statement received by IraqiNews.com, he said” Article (80) of Roma Pact in 1998, which was formed by the International Criminal Court, gave the right of applying the death penalty to the countries and this pact is a legal one.”

“If the European countries were facing what Iraq has faced, they will apply the death penalty due to the crimes that were committed in Iraq,” he added.

“The death sentence is the legal and the religious punishment to limit major crimes,” he pointed out, assuring that “UNAMI’s role is to support Iraq only and regarding this punishment, we wish to re-consider this request because the Iraqi situation is different from that of Europe.”
