INEC says UNSC’s decision came at right time

ARBIL / IraqiNews.com: The Chairman of Iraq‘s National Nuclear Energy Committee (INEC) on Thursday described the UN Security Council’s Resolution to lift its decision that banned Iraq‘s use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as “having taken place at the right time, because Iraq needs the energy for several purposes.” “The UNSC’s Resolution represents utmost significance for Iraq and for the experts in this respect, and I think it was taken at the right time, coping with the formation of the new government,” Fuad al-Mousawi, attending the 10th Arab Conference for peaceful use of the nuclear energy, currently being held in Arbil, told IraqiNews.com news agency. “Iraq‘s basic needs for nuclear energy is to use it in the fields of environment, water and current problems in this respect, followed by the use of nuclear energy in electric power generation,” Mousawi said. Mousawi noted that Iraq used to house three nuclear reactors: Tammuz I, a French-produced reactor that was attacked by Israel, another small reactor that was attacked in 1991 which rendered it useless, and the last a Reactor-5000, a Russian-made reactor, that was also destroyed.
