Inernational Conerence on “Role of Woman in Building Peace” concuded.

ARBIL / IraqiNews.com: The International Conference on the “Role of Woman in building Peace, Tranquility and Questioning in Iraq,” was concluded in north Iraq‘s Arbil city, issuing several recommendations, aimed at boosting equivalence between both sexes and the political, social and economic role of the Iraqi woman.” The recommendations, read by  Woman Activist, Ghada al-Wa’ily at the end of the conference’s last session called on “necessity of commitment of the measures, covering the leading officials to prevent their punishment in the event of violence acts against the woman, as well as participation of the civil society organizations in the process of equality between both sexes, the formation of international companies and development programs, concentrating on boosting equality  between both sexes.” The recommendations also called for necessity to revise educational programs and systems to guarantee the concept of equality between both sexes and practicing it in all Iraqi educational institutions. They also reiterated that the share of the woman in the so-called “quota system” must not be less than 25% and to allow women to nominate themselves in special lists belonging to them, in addition to their right to participate within the lists of political entities outside the “quota system,” provided that would be represented in the government and administrative positions. The conference also called for laying down a “road map for the state regarding the role of woman in the political, social and economic life in Iraq in the forthcoming five or ten years, as well as the formation of a “National Woman Council,” and the adjustment of legislation that discriminate against women on humanitarian basis, including Article 398 of the Iraqi Penal Code related to rape, allowing the offender to marry her victim and avoids punishment. The recommendations called for the abolishing of the laws related to the woman, including preventing her to apply for passport without being accompanied by a “non-forbidden” man, meaning the husband, brother, father or uncle, and the abolishing of Article 1-41 of the Iraqi Penal Cope, granting the legal right of the man to watch his wife. After the end of the conference, the State Minister for the Federal Government, Bushra al-Zuwainy, promised to “present the its recommendations to the Council of Ministers, in order to enter them into action.” The International Conference on the “Role of Woman in Building Peace, Tranquility and Questioning in Iraq, had started its works last Thursday, with the participation of Members of the Iraqi and Kurdistan Parliaments, the United Nations, the Arab League, the Islamic Conference Organization and representatives of the civil society and international experts in the field of strengthening the role of woman in the national reconciliation.
