Iraq among countries accepting foreign immigrants

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The UN Commission for Immigrants Affairs, who has celebrated on Thursday the 60 th anniversary for the Geneva Agreement for Immigrants, has reiterated that “Iraq is among the countries that accepts immigrants, despite fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have returned back to their homeland from neighboring states.”   “Despite fact that Iraq was not among the states that signed the 1951 Agreement, related to the immigrants or its attached protocol for 1957, but Iraq had always been host for immigrants, where the immigrants presently enjoy the 1971 law on political immigrants,” the Commission said.   It stressed that a large number of immigrants could work and sometimes get the Iraqi nationality, adding that the Commission had been acting in a strong means with the Iraqi government, in order to allow 38,000 immigrants, belonging to Palestinian, Iranian, Syrian and Turkish origins, along with a small number of Sudanese and Somalian immigrants.   SKH (IT)
