Iraq takes part in UN convention against corruption

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: Iraq is taking part in the third session of the Conference of the State Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption being held in the Qatari capital of Doha from Nov. 9-13, according to a cabinet statement. The five-day event gathered more than 1,000 officials representing heads of anti-corruption departments from over 100 countries and dozens of non-governmental organizations. The Iraqi delegation consists of the Head of the Integrity Authority Judge Raheem al-Akeeli, Iraqi Ambassador to Qatar Jawad al-Hendawi and other financial officials. Being the first legally binding international anti-corruption instrument, the Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly on Oct. 31, 2003, in accordance with Resolution 58/4 and entered into force on Dec. 14, 2005. The initial purposes of the Convention include: promoting efficient and effective measures to prevent and combat corruption, facilitating international cooperation and technical assistance infighting corruption, enhancing integrity, accountability and proper management of public property. Jordan and Indonesia hosted the previous two sessions of the conference. SH (S)/SR 1
