Iraqi Government calls UN experts to investigate reports over use of chemical weapons in Syria

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi Government called the UN to conduct international investigations over the reports of using the chemical weapons in the armed conflicts in Syria.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received by IraqiNews.com cited “The Iraqi government has and is condemning the use of internationally banned chemical weapons in the internal conflict in Syria.”

“The Iraqi people suffered severely from the use of such weapons by the former dictator regime against it, especially in Halabja on March 1988. Many Iraqis are suffering from the consequences and pains of these weapons, so far. The Iraqi constitution stipulates “the government’s full respect to fulfill Iraq’s international obligations regarding the non-proliferation, development, production, and use of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and prohibit anything related to their development, production, and use of equipment, materials, and information technologies,” the statement continued.

“Hence, the Iraqi government asserts the necessity of conducting an international investigation by the UN inspectors in this horrific incident and demands the conflicting parties to fully cooperate with the investigation for the flagrant violation of the international law that this crime represents for which the perpetrators should be punished,” the statement concluded.
