Maliki confirms Iraqi support to Ibrahimi

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki warned from the consequences of continued fighting in Syria, calling during a meeting with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the UN, Lakhdar al-Ibrahimi to “move quickly in order to keep the Syrian people as brothers.”

A statement by Maliki’s office received by Iraqi News (IraqiNews.com) cited “Maliki also renewed the Iraqi support for the international and Arab efforts for resolving the Syrian crisis.”

The statement added that “PM Maliki received in his office on Monday the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the UN, Lakhdar al-Ibrahimi, and discussed with him the seriousness of the Syrian crisis and the best ways of finding a political solution to end the crisis.”

According to the statement Maliki addressed al-Ibrahimi, “We support you with all our capacities to assure your success which will be a success for Syria and the whole region,” stressing that “The UN should move quickly in order to preserve the future and unity of Syria as well as to preserve the security and stability of the region.”

The statement mentioned “The Prime Minister also called all the influential countries in the Syrian affairs to realize the dangerous developments of the Syrian crisis and the necessity to deal with it with high responsibility.”

For his part, al-Ibrahimi, according to the statement “gave initial vision to resolve the crisis consistent with the vision of Iraq posed from the outset, and relies on a comprehensive cease-fire and launching a political process to achieve an acceptable solution to the Syrian people and preserve their rights and legitimate aspirations.”

The statement noted, “The two sides, agreed on a series of steps that could constitute a road map to get out of the Syrian crisis as soon as possible.”
