MPs call to amend mechanism of distributing parliamentary seats

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) MPs from various parliamentary blocs called “To amend the mechanism of distributing the parliamentary seats.”

A statement recited by MP Hussien al-Marabi of the Iraqi National Alliance during a press conference on behalf of the other MPs at the parliament building on Wednesday cited “The Federal Court considered the former electoral system as opposing to the Articles 20 and 30 of the constitution because it grants the vote of the voter to another candidate whom he did not elect.”

“The constitution states that the decision of the Federal Court is compulsory for all authorities so the parliament has to amend the mechanism of distributing the parliamentary seats for the best loser to go in harmony with the constitution and to achieve justice,” he added.

“according to the former electoral system about 35% or 30% of the votes are to be represented while some times about 65% or 70% of the votes are to be neglected which is definitely against democracy that means representing the majority,” he continued.

“Granting the votes for the best loser is to grant wide participation in the political process which consolidates the stability of the political regime,” he concluded.
