Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Social network commentators have taken on Iraq Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari with ridicule as the latter wished “success” for late Iraqi president Jalal Talabani.

“Mr. Jalal al-Talabani’s stances will be remembered as patriotic Iraqi stances, and I wish him all success,” Jaafari told reporters Monday during a press conference held at a mourning ceremony for the former president in Baghdad.

Talabani, Iraq’s first non-Arab president, who held office between 2005 and 2014, died last week at a hospital in Germany where he was hosted for treatment from a long illness.

“My God give you success as He did Talabani,” one user commented on Facebook.

“Seems he (Jaafari) has a feeling that he (Talabani) might not see success at his destination, so he prays that Allah grants him success, it is a compliment,” another user said.

Several Iraqi political figures had attended Talabani’s mourning ceremony in Kurdistan region.

Viewed by many as a national unity figure, Talabani’s death came amid heightening tensions between Baghdad and Erbil over a referendum the latter held last month where 92% voted for independence from Iraq.
