UNAMI works to bring Iraq out of Chapter VII – SRSG

BRUSSELS / IraqiNews.com: The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG),? Ad Melkert, said on Wednesday that the UN mission works to improve relations between Iraq and Kuwait to bring the country out of Chapter VII. “The mission’s work in Iraq focuses on supporting the political process and improving relations with Kuwait to bring Iraq out of Chapter VII, in addition to improving relations between Arab and Kurds,” Melkert said at a European Parliament session in Brussels. He valued the role played by the European Union in Iraq, voicing hope for more cooperation in energy and human rights fields. He considered the formation of the new government as an important factor for Iraq’s security and stability. Regarding the recent attacks on Christians in Iraq, including the attack on the Lady of Salvation Church, the official said “the UN has condemned these attacks,” noting that he could not talk about the new government’s plan to protect minorities because “Iraqi politicians condemned the attacks and there is a belief that Iraq’s future should be based on mutual respect among all Iraqis.” SH (P) 266
