Wassit farmers demonstrate to protest water scarcity

Wassit (IraqiNews.com) A number of farmers demonstrated to protest the water scarcity in Hay district 45 km to the south of Kut city, the center of Wassit province.

IraqiNews.com correspondent reported that “A number of farmers rallied in Hay district to protest the water scarcity for irrigation purposes devoted to the farmlands, and the degradation in the agricultural situation in the district.”

“The demonstrators raised signs in which they demanded each of the local and Central Government to provide the irrigation water and develop the agricultural posture”

“The Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, has called on June 26th to adopt foreign expertise to set an inclusive plan to address the water scarcity where he instructed to form a commission to select a company to work in this regard,” the correspondent added.

The Government attributes the decrease in the water resources in Iraq to the erection of dams by Turkey and Syria on Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in addition to the effects of global warming phenomenon.
