MoD confirms controlling Tasfirat Prison of Tikrit

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Ministry of Defense confirmed controlling the situation in Tasfirat Prison and the general situation on Salah-il-Din province which witnessed clashes and escape of prisoners on last Thursday.

The spokesperson of the Ministry, Colonel Dhiya al-Wakil, stated to IraqiNews.com “The whole situation in Salah-il-Din province or Tasfirat Prison in Tikrit is now under full control of the Iraqi Security forces.”

He added “The Tasfirat Prison witnessed riots and chaos caused by some prisoners who are sentenced to death or long term in prison verdicts who made use of the humanitarian treatment of the jailors, which resulted in killing and injuring several guards while they were to impose law inside the wardens.”

“Some dangerous detainees confiscated the weapons of the guards during the chaos and some of them escaped outside the prison which is under supervision of Salah-il-Din Police Department, but the Iraqi Security Forces managed to control the situation in a short time through surrounding the prison and storming in the building with the first light of last Friday without any resistance,” he added.

“The security forces, which include elite units from the Ground Forces and units from Samara Operations Command, started to count the prisoners and secure the building as well as chasing the fugitives inside Tikrit city which witnessed imposing curfew,” according to Wakil, who assured that “Many fugitives have been captured.”
