Anbar (IraqiNews.com) A soldier was killed, three others were severely wounded in an attack launched by Islamic State militants in Rutba town, in west of Anbar.
“IS militants attacked soldiers from different units 170 KM in Rutba on the international road, west of Anbar, leaving a soldier killed and three others profoundly injured,” a security source from Anbar Operations Command told AlJournal News on Saturday.
“The troops opened fire against the militants, but the attackers were able to escape toward the western desert,” the source added.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added that “the attacks by IS members against military personnel, Jazeera Operations Command and the border troops personnel have taken place recently.” The areas, where troops are targeted are known as “death zones” that are surrounded by desert from all sides, making it hard to be fully secured.
Meanwhile, a leader from the paramilitary troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) declared killing a Tunisian IS leader, west of Ramadi.
“IS militants, headed by a prominent leader called abu Hareth al-Tounsi attempted attacking a security barrier in al-Baghdadi district,” Qutri al-Ebeidi, PMU official said.
“The troops foiled the attack and killed all the assailants, including the Arab militant,” he added.
