On Sunday United Nations expressed concern about the rise of executions carried out by the authorities in Iraq since the reintroduction of the death penalty in 2005, while pointing out that the death penalty in these circumstances carries the risk of “serious mistakes” that are irreversible in the application of justice provisions, appealing to the Iraqi government to reconsider the implementation of death sentences.

A report by the United Nations Mission to help Iraq (UNAMI) and the Office of the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Human Rights (OHCHR) has been received by IraqiNews.com  said that “the number of death sentences carried out in Iraq increased dramatically between 2005 and 2009,” noting that “124 people were executed in 2009 only.”
