Iraqi, U.S. universities sign cooperation deal

WASSIT / IraqiNews.com: The University of Wassit has signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Oregon (UO) to promote academic, scientific and cultural exchange, the president of Wassit University said on Tuesday. “An exchange of information will take place between academicians and students of both universities through correspondence,” Jawad al-Moussawi told IraqiNews.com. “This agreement has been put into place starting Tuesday. A whole-year English language course will be offered under the supervision of American university professors,” Moussawi noted. Earlier this year, Wassit University signed a similar agreement with the American University of Beirut (AUB), but the agreement has not been put into place thus far. The University of Oregon (UO) is a public, coeducational research university in Eugene , Oregon , United States . The second oldest public university in the state, and the flagship school of the Oregon public university system, UO was founded in 1876, and graduated its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. A Shiite province, Wassit, 180 km south of Baghdad , is in the east of the country. Its name comes from the Arabic word meaning “middle,” as it lies along the Tigris about midway between Baghdad and Basra . Its major cities include the capital, al-Kut, and al-Hayy.
