ISIS to jail and fine smokers in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) On Sunday—according to a local source in Nineveh province—the organization of the so-called Islamic state in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) decided to imprison and impose a fine of up to $400 on smokers in Mosul.

The source said in an interview for IraqiNews.com, “ISIS issued a statement containing a number of decisions that require to imprison a person who smokes cigarettes for two months with a fine of $200,” noting that the organization also decided to “lock up smokers caught in the act again for a period of six months with a fine of $400.”

The source—who requested anonymity—said, “The organization ISIS forced shop owners not only to close their shops for 20 minutes during Athan and the five daily prayer times but also to attend prayers compulsorily,” noting that penalties, including whipping, to be imposed upon disobedient shop owners.
